History of HGUMC
Hickory Grove United Methodist Church was born in 1844 out of a Plan of Separation between the Northern and Southern Methodist Churches which was agreed on in 1844 -- the churches couldn't see eye to eye on the question of slavery. The North had grown more "anti“, the South more lax and differences couldn’t be reconciled. There is no record of the feeling on the subject in the scattered farming community of Hickory Grove Mecklenburg County, but it is interesting that Hickory Grove Methodist Church was born in that year.
